Location
Masjid al-Musalla is located in a south easternly direction of the Masjid al-Nabawi and 1/2 kilometre from the Bab al-Salam.
Names
- Masjid al-Musalla: The Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) offered the Eid prayer in a number of locations in this open area and it was thus named as the Maydan al-Musalla. In the later years he took this specific location as a place of prayer [Ibn Shabbah]
- Masjid al-Ghamama: This masjid is better known today as Masjid al-Ghamama, perhaps the reason for this being that a cloud veiled the sun from the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) during the rain prayer (Istisqa) in this location [ according to Tarikh Ma'alim al-Madinah al-Munawwarah], however Shaykh Ilyas Abd al-Ghani comments he cannot find this in classical works.
Building
Imam al-Samhudi (d.911 Hijri) noted that this Masjid was contructed during the rule of Umar bin Abd al-Aziz during his rule in Madina between the years (87-93 Hijri).
