Names of Madina
You might be surprised to learn that the city of Madina has many different names. In fact, some scholars such as Imam al-Samhudi have counted up to 94 names for this blessed city, each with its own meaning and origin. In this article, we will focus on four of the most important names that are directly related to the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace).
Madina
The first name is Madina, which means “the city” in Arabic. This is the most common and well-known name for the city, and it is also mentioned in the Quran. Allah Taala says in Surah al-Tawbah:
“And among those around you of the bedouins are hypocrites, and [also] from the people of Madinah. They have become accustomed to hypocrisy.” (9:101)
Tabah
This name was given by the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace), as narrated by Imam Muslim he said:
“Allah Taala has named Madina: Tabah.”
Taybah
The third name is Taybah, which is also attributed to the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace), as reported by Imam Muslim. He said:
“It is Taybah – referring to Madina – it expels filth just as fire expels impurities from silver.”
Al-Dar
The fourth name is Al-Dar, which means “the home” or “the abode” in Arabic. This name is also narrated by the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace), as recorded by Imam al-Tabarani in his al-Awsat collection. He said:
“Madina is the dome of Islam, the abode (dar) of faith and land of migration…”.
Imams Mundhiri and Suyuti graded it authentic (Hasan or similar).
These are some of the names of Madina that are linked to the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). They reflect the honor and status of this city in Islam, may Allah grant us the opportunity to visit Madina and benefit from its blessings.
